The mechanism is accepted as an astronomical calculating device of the second or early first century BCE: its gear trains tracked the Sun and Moon (including lunar anomaly), predicted eclipses via the Saros cycle, and displayed calendars including the four-year games cycle. It descends from a Greek tradition of geared modelling attested in written sources but otherwise lost.
Recovered by sponge divers from a wreck off Antikythera in 1901 and long ignored as corroded lumps, the device yielded its secrets progressively through X-ray and computed tomography studies.
